NORTHWOOD ELEMENTARY VISIT

On Friday, May 20th, students of ECAAR visited Northwood Elementary's 4th and 5th grade classrooms to lead workshops on various topics related to Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage!

To each 4th and 5th grade classroom, ECAAR members presented on one of three topics: Chinese Lunar New Year, Origami, or the Americanization of Asian Food.
The Chinese New Year presentation celebrated and explained the traditions of the holiday. Students read legends, watched traditional lion dancing, and made paper lanterns.

The Origami presentation included a brief history of origami, its cultural significance, and some modern applications of the seemingly simple art. Students learned how to fold their own origami frogs and about the significance of frogs in Japanese culture.

The Americanization of Asian Food presentation emphasized the importance of preserving culture by examining authentic and Westernized practices; activities included learning how to use chopsticks (plus a chopsticks competition) and making play dough dumplings!
